Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five are one of the most influential hip hop groups of all time, formed in the Bronx, New York in 1978, despite being locally popular, Hip Hop in its early years wasn't mainstream and as a music genre was primitive consisting of sampling and creating breaks and rapping over them, with the Sugarhill Gang's release of Rapper's Delight in 1979, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five also made their first recorded song on the Enjoy Records label during the same year, it was called "Superappin". Shortly afterwards, the switched to Sylvia Robinson's Sugar Hill Records label.

In 1982, the group released one of the most influential Hip Hop records of all time; The Message, not only has this anthem been sampled (lyrically as well as musically) many times by leading artists such as Ice Cube, Puff Daddy and Mase and Snoop Dogg and 2Pac, it was also the first track to have political and social commentary, rapping about poverty, drugs, violence etc as opposed to partying/dancing and/or freestyling as Hip Hop had been previously.
